We all got up and drove into Key West where we paid $35 to
park!!! We got tickets for the Conch
train which took us all over Key West including the Southernmost point,
Hemingway’s house, etc.
After the train
ride we ate lunch at Red Fish Blue Fish, which is right next to the Shipwreck
Museum which is right in front of Mallory Square. The meal was pretty good. As an appetizer we ordered Conch Fritters
because we'd just learned on the train ride that conch are like giant sea slugs
and the shells are just named for the animal that lives inside of them. I didn’t care for the fritters but my salad
and pina colada were great.
After lunch it was on to the Shipwreck Museum which was just
so-so but we did get to climb to the top of the lookout tower and the view was
spectacular. We also learned that most
of Key West’s wealth came from recovering goods from wrecked ships and that the
people who recovered the goods were called wreckers.
After the museum, we headed back to the house and hung
outside
For dinner that night we grilled chicken breasts and just
stayed at the house. The Brekkens
brought the Spy Kids movies, which my kids hadn’t seen before so I think they
watched one of those for the 3rd or so time.
